Art to me is a way of expression and relaxation. It’s so cliché but art is how I express myself, it’s how I find peace in this insane world. My goals for art are just to have fun and, make myself happy. I don’t plan to go to college to study art or to end up being a famous artist one day, for me art is just a hobby that I love, one that I won’t grow out of, one that I can continue to do even when I’m too old to walk or something. I just want to have fun with expressing myself.
I’ve always been inspired by old photos especially the 1920’s era along with things that I see and think about while listening to music. My favorite things to use are charcoal and acrylic; I love how you can get so many values with both medias. I’ve been using acrylic forever and just recently started experimenting with charcoal and I definitely love it! I usually involve people in all of my work. I select the materials solely on what I’m most comfortable with or what I find most interesting. At St. Bernard’s we were never taught exact rules or techniques on how to make art they gave us guidelines for a specific project or media but we had freedom on how we would use what they gave us, so I have always just learned on my own and experimented to see what I like and what I’m comfortable doing. And what I learned at St. Bernard’s and at home on my own has shaped how I select my materials, techniques and themes here at Preble.
I’ve been making art projects ever since I was little; my grandparents always had little fun projects for my cousins, siblings and myself to do. My mom has been painting and drawing here and there forever, she minored in art in college and all of the support and push to be creative and express myself when I was little is what solidified my love for art and also shaped my style today. My current work is based on whatever I’m feeling; usually the work carries a sort of light heartedness and soft feeling to it. I use experiences such as when I took ballet, my years skating, books I’ve read or music I listen to shape and inspire my work. Currently I am attempting to get whatever’s on my mind out on the paper or canvas; I’m working on not being inspired by a picture alone but by something in my head instead.
